Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett is the projected winner of Tuesday's recall primary election for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. Barrett has defeated three Democrats and one Republican running as a "fake" Democrat. Former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk finished second, and urged Democrats to unite behind Barrett. In a statement, she said, "Tomorrow, I will join Tom and the other candidates in this primary to renew our commitment to taking our government back."
There currently are two female governors in the country. They serve in North Carolina and Washington state. Neither is seeking reelection in 2012. Supporters of Kathleen Falk say she could fill that void if elected governor of Wisconsin.
Democratic candidates for governor Tom Barrett and Kathleen Falk are making late bids for labor votes, ahead of Tuesday's (5/8) recall primary.
Polls say the Democratic gubernatorial primary appears to be a two-person contest between Milwaukee Mayor Barrett and former Dane County Executive Falk. Both candidates spent a lot of time campaigning over the weekend, with Barrett ending Sunday (5/6) at an event in Milwaukee's Bay View neighborhood.
Most of the Democrats running for governor showed a reluctance to raising the state's sales tax to pay for schools in a Friday night debate broadcast by Wisconsin Public Radio and Television.
But all were open to reversing tax cuts signed into law by Governor Scott Walker.
Candidates were asked specifically if they would support raising the sales tax by a penny per dollar to pay for schools.
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett is trying to keep the focus on Scott Walker, ahead of next Tuesday's Democratic primary in the gubernatorial recall election.
