The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development is urging job seekers to consider a career in the trucking industry. DWD currently has over 700 trucking related jobs in the state listed on its website.
Tom Howells is President of the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association. He says there's a shortage of truck drivers nationwide.
"A lot of it has to do as the economy heats up we need more truck drivers," he says. "A lot of it has to do with just the demographics of the workforce. Many of the truck drivers that we have now are getting older and many of them now are retiring or will be retiring in the next few years, so kind of a combination of both."
Howells says in addition to truck drivers, there's also a need for diesel mechanics. D-W-D has created a special page on its website highlighting jobs and training programs in the trucking industry. That site is jobcenterofwisconsin.com/trucking.
